Our adventure begins on Saturday from the picturesque village of Viniani, where we will start the ascent through the spectacular Rekka Gorge. Along the route, we will stop at the idyllic spot Mylo to enjoy the view and refresh ourselves before continuing through the dense fir forest and the imposing cliffs of the area. Our day will conclude at the POA refuge in Lakka Karvouni, where we will spend the night under the starlit sky, surrounded by alpine nature.
Sunday morning: The ascent to the Pyramid Summit, at 2,508 meters, awaits! The adrenaline peaks as you approach the summit, where the view from 2,508 meters will take your breath away. Experience the ultimate mountaineering adventure on one of Greece’s most iconic peaks.

With the arrival of December, Giona begins to dress in its white veil, creating the perfect setting for winter climbs. This legendary mountain, known in antiquity as the “aselinon oros” (moonless mountain), is the highest in Central Greece and the fifth highest in Greece, with an elevation of 2,510 meters. The winter ascent of Giona is one of the greatest challenges for any mountaineering enthusiast and the perfect start to the snow-covered adventures to come!

Climb to one of the wildest and most impressive landscapes in Greece, discover the Plaka Sykias, the largest cliff face in the Balkans with a height of 1,100 meters, and explore the magical landscape where, according to myth, the Moon used to flirt. Day 1: Saturday
Departure: Morning departure from Athens with a luxury bus of BOA (Base Outdoor Activities), heading to the beautiful village of Viniani.
Route: Viniani – POA Refuge at Lakka Karvouni

Route Description

The adventure begins in the village of Viniani, following the course of the imposing Rekka Gorge. Our path crosses an impressive field of boulders, reaching Mylo for the first stop, where we can take a breath amidst a picturesque landscape. From there, we will follow a magical forest trail through dense fir trees and limestone cliffs, where nature dominates in an imposing way, creating a sense of isolation.

At the end of the day, our journey will take us to Lakka Karvouni, where the hospitable refuge of Giona is located. Here, we will enjoy a special evening, warmed by the coziness of the refuge and surrounded by the majesty of the mountain. A night under the starry sky of Giona awaits, where the experience becomes even more magical with the peace and tranquility of nature accompanying you.

Day 2: Sunday, April 10th

Route: Refuge – Pyramid Summit (2,508 m) – Kolokopi

  • Starting point: POA Refuge at Lakka Karvouni (1,753 m)
  • Destination: Pyramid Summit (2,508 m) and then the picturesque village of Kolokopi (1,050 m)
  • Distance: 10+ km
  • Elevation difference: +750 m, -1300 m
  • Duration: 6 hours
  • Difficulty level: Moderate to Difficult

Route Description

We start the day at 07:00 with the ascent to the impressive Pyramid Summit, at 2,508 meters. The ascent takes about 2-2.5 hours, and in some places, crampons may be needed, especially on the icy slopes leading to the Saddle. Once at the summit, the panoramic view will reward you, revealing the highest peaks of Central Greece in all their glory.

If time allows, we will have the opportunity to also climb to the Platovouna Summit (2,317 m), adding another ascent to our adventure. The descent will lead us through the Vathia Lakka with its stunning geomorphology, to the traditional and picturesque village of Kolokopi, where we will enjoy the mountain atmosphere.

The Area

Giona, the imposing mountain of Central Greece, is one of the most impressive and wild mountain ranges in the country. With its Pyramid Summit reaching 2,510 meters, Giona is the highest mountain in Central Greece and the fifth-highest in Greece. The mountain is renowned for its steep slopes, deep gorges, and impressive cliffs, with the most notable being the famous Plaka Sykias — the largest cliff in the Balkans, standing at 1,100 meters.

  • The route from Viniani to the POA refuge follows the impressive Rekka Gorge, passing through boulder fields and forested paths among fir trees. The limestone cliffs create a stunning backdrop. The ascent gradually becomes more demanding, making the route ideal for hikers in good physical condition. It offers several rest stops, and the views along the way will reward your effort.

Route: POA Refuge – Pyramid Summit – Kolokopi

  • Difficulty Level: Challenging
  • The second day includes the ascent to the Pyramid Summit (2,508 m), with breathtaking views and winter conditions that add to the challenge. The route requires equipment for the icy sections and is suitable for experienced hikers in excellent physical condition. After the summit, the descent to Kolokopi is mostly downhill but requires caution due to the challenging parts of the trail, while the natural scenery of the area is impressive.

To participate in the activity, it is essential to be in good health and not have any cardiac issues, underlying conditions, or be on medication. Required Equipment for the Activity

Proper preparation and the right equipment are essential to ensure your comfort and safety during the hike, especially in winter and wet conditions. Winter in the mountains brings unpredictable weather, so proper preparation is crucial.
The recommended equipment includes:

  • Hiking shoes: Waterproof boots with good grip for wet or slippery terrain.
  • Layered clothing (Layering):
    • Base layer: Moisture-wicking synthetic or wool fabric to keep sweat away from your body.
    • Mid layer: Warm fleece or thermal jacket to maintain body temperature.
    • Waterproof/Windproof jacket: For protection from wind and rain.
  • Hiking pants: Waterproof, durable, and flexible for comfort in all conditions.
  • Gloves and beanie: Essential for protection from the cold, especially at higher altitudes.
  • Backpack (30-40 liters): Large enough to carry your gear (water, snacks, raincoat, extra clothes). Ideally waterproof or with a rain cover.
  • Water bottle or hydration system: At least 1.5-2 liters of water, especially if you plan to summit.
  • Headlamp: With extra batteries, in case you need light if the hike extends into the evening.
  • Energy snacks: Nuts, energy bars, or dried fruits to maintain energy throughout the hike.
  • First aid kit: Small kit with essentials (bandages, antiseptic, blister cream).
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen: Necessary even in winter conditions.
  • Hiking poles (optional): For extra support, especially on uphill and downhill sections.
  • Sleeping bag: For your stay at the refuge.

Terms of Participation

By participating in the program, each participant declares that they have read and fully understood the terms and regulations set forth by BOA. These regulations are available in the participation form and in all related documents, instructions, or regulations issued by the company.

Program Modification or Cancellation

BOA reserves the right to modify or cancel the program due to adverse weather conditions or other unforeseen factors that pose a risk to the safe implementation of the activity. Participant safety is the top priority.

If it becomes necessary to modify or cancel part of the program during the activity, the company reserves the right to make the necessary changes to ensure the safety of all participants. In such cases, participation fees will not be refunded.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

  • Participant cancellation: In case of cancellation after the cancellation deadline, tickets are non-refundable. If the cancellation is made within 10 days prior to the activity, no refund is offered.
  • Refund policy: If the cancellation is made before the 10-day deadline, amounts will be refunded, with any applicable bank fees deducted.
  • Company cancellation: If BOA cancels the activity before it begins, participants will receive a full refund.

Tickets are valid exclusively for the activity for which they were issued and cannot be transferred to another activity or date.
