Hiking on the old railway path in the Asopos gorge

February 11 @ 08:00 - 17:00 €35.00

Hiking on the old railway path in the Asopos gorge.
In the heart of winter we hike and end our activity with a bath in the thermal springs of Thermopylae.

The Railway Trail dates back to the end of the 19th century, when the Kato Tithorea – Lianokladi railway line was built,
specifically the section between Asopos and Trachina stations. The trail was built to transport materials and animal
workers alongside the railroad, so it is still known today as “The Railroad Trail.”
Tunnels, bridges, abandoned stations, gorges, waters and endless images from nature follow us along the entire route.
The program starts on Sunday morning from Syntagma with the departure of the bus bound for a small traditional
settlement in Fthiotida where our path begins.

There we will start our hike and follow the old path (12 km) to a historic and well-known train stop during the interwar period.
The path throughout the hike offers beautiful images and a panoramic view of the area.
Upon completion of the activity, those who wish will go for a relaxing bath in the thermal baths of Thermopylae.
Food and coffee afterwards for everyone in Kamena Vourla and return to Athens.

Activities point

Thermopylae is the site of the Battle of Thermopylae between the Greek forces (including Spartans,
Thebans and Thespians) and the invading Persian forces, commemorated by Simonides of Ceos in the epitaph,
“Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, That here obedient to their laws we lie.” Thermopylae is the only land route large
enough to bear any significant traffic between Lokris and Thessaly. To go from north to south along the east coast of the Balkans
requires use of the pass. In ancient times it was called Malis, named after the Malians (Ancient Greek: Μαλιεῖς),
a Greek tribe that lived near present-day Lamia at the delta of the river Spercheios in Greece.
The Malian Gulf is also named after them. In the western valley of the Spercheios their land was adjacent to the Aenianes.
Their main town was named Trachis. In the town of Anthela, the Malians had an
important Temple of Demeter Amphictyonis, an early center of the Anthelan Amphictyony.
The hot springs from which Thermopylae takes its name.
The hot springs from which the pass derives its name still exist close to the foot of the hill.
