Hiking Psiloritis top of mount Timios Stavros
The Ηiking to Psiloritis and its highest peak, Timios Stavros at 2,456m is a challenge for everyone.
Psiloritis, which according to myths has the privilege of seeing the sun before sunrise,
is a monument of world natural heritage, of immense beauty, wrapped
in a timeless veil of history and customs. The history of the mountain
is inextricably linked with the history of Crete.
The hike starts from the northern side of the mountain which is towards Rethymno
and specifically from the point Lakko Mygerou which is at an altitude of 1700m.
The route is beautiful with a view of the blue Aegean, and moves on an uphill, stone-built,
well-marked path that after two hours meets the European path E4.
After that we reach the highest peak, Timios Stavros, which
offers a panoramic view of the whole island. The return is made by the same path.
Extra information During the summer the temperature is always 10c
below sea level and it is not unusual to need a jacket! From
January to early April the peak is usually covered with snow.
Psiloritis, which belongs to the regional unit of Rethymnon,
was a sacred place for the Titaness Rhea and on its slopes is one of the caves,
the Ideo Andron, in which, according to legend, Zeus was born.
Its peak, Timios Stavros, has the highest topographical position in Greece.
