Hiking in the Alpine Dragon Lake of Mount Timfi
Hiking to the Dragon Lake (Drakolimni) of Mount Timfi is undoubtedly one of the most impressive experiences one can have in Epirus. Located at an altitude of about 2,050 meters, it is one of the most famous alpine destinations in Greece. If paradise could be captured in images, one of them would surely be the Drakolimni of Tymfi. This particular trail has been recognized by many international magazines and travel guides as the most beautiful hiking route in the country.
The Trail
The hike begins in Mikro Papigo, one of the traditional and picturesque villages of Zagori, built from local stone and surrounded by impressive dry stone walls, a characteristic feature of the region. As you ascend towards Dragon Lake, the breathtaking view unfolds, featuring landscapes filled with lush green meadows, forests, and steep mountain peaks surrounding the trail.
The hike to Dragon Lake takes about 5-6 hours, depending on the pace and fitness level of the hikers. The path passes through the famous stone-built trails and reaches the Astraka Mountain Refuge, which is an ideal stop for rest and refreshment before the final ascent to the lake.
The Unique Beauty of Dragon Lake
At the top of the trail, beneath the imposing Tymfi Mountain with a height of 2,497 meters, you will find Dragon Lake, an alpine lake formed by ancient glaciers. The lake has an elliptical shape, covering an area of about 8 acres, and is one of the most scenic destinations in Greece.
The lake is famous for its small “dragons,” alpine newts (Triturus alpestris), which add a mysterious and fairy-tale charm to the landscape. The crystal-clear waters of the lake reflect the steep peaks of Tymfi, creating a scene that almost surpasses reality.
A Rare Alpine Landscape
Dragon Lake of Tymfi lies in a stunning alpine plateau, surrounded by meadows rich in flora and fauna unique to the region. During spring and summer, the meadows are covered with wildflowers and aromatic plants, while the wildlife includes rare bird species and mammals.
The area is known for its unique geomorphology, featuring steep slopes, deep gorges, and natural formations that impress every visitor. The landscape is so captivating that many have described it as a “hidden gem” of Greece.
What You Should Know
Hiking to Dragon Lake is considered moderately difficult and requires good physical condition. The best time to visit is in spring and summer when the weather is milder, and the trails are safer. However, even in autumn, the landscape remains stunning with the colorful changes in nature.
The route offers numerous opportunities for photography and relaxation in nature, making it ideal for hiking and wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can combine their hike with a visit to the traditional villages of Zagori, such as Mikro and Megalo Papigo, where they can experience authentic Epirotic hospitality.
