One-day Hike in Velitsa Gorge with a Destination to Trypi Waterfalls
Hiking in Velitsa Gorge is one of the most scenic and impressive routes in the region, offering a rare experience in untouched nature. The trail passes through a secluded and unexplored area that remains almost pristine.
Area and Village
The village of Velitsa (now known as Ano Kalentini) is located in the Arta region, in the heart of Epirus. Surrounded by stunning landscapes, it is situated near the Achelous River, offering beautiful natural scenery. The area is filled with springs, flowing water, and impressive waterfalls.
Velitsa Gorge is nestled between mountains with lush vegetation and imposing cliffs, offering a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty of Epirus. The village features traditional mansions, old stone bridges, and churches that speak to its rich historical heritage.
The Route
The hike begins in the village and proceeds into the Velitsa Gorge with the aim of reaching the Trypi Waterfalls. The hike lasts about 5 hours and includes a rest stop at Dipotama, where participants can enjoy the flowing waters and surrounding nature.
Following that, we take the Old Path, a traditional route leading to one of the most impressive points of the hike: the Water Supply Pipe. From there, the ascent becomes more demanding, but hikers are rewarded with their first glimpse of the Trypi Waterfall, a spectacular waterfall descending from a great height.
The hike continues to the second waterfall, 80 meters tall, where the landscape becomes even more dramatic. On the way back, there’s an opportunity for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear, cold waters of the river, an experience that will rejuvenate every participant.
Region: Tithorea
Tithorea, a historic village on Mount Parnassus, is famous for its wild natural beauty and rich history. According to Greek mythology, the area is linked with the myths of Dryope and other legendary tales. Velitsa Gorge, known for its impressive landscape and steep cliffs, offers hikers a unique experience as they descend through the trail, passing by points with flowing water and lush greenery.
Tithorea is also renowned for its ancient settlement and the remains of its castle, which held strategic importance in antiquity. The village also offers stunning views of Parnassus and serves as a great starting point for hiking and mountaineering activities.
Hiking Trail
The hike starts from the village of Tithorea and follows the trail into Velitsa Gorge, an area with incredibly steep cliffs and vibrant greenery. Along the way, we rest at Dipotama, a spot with impressive springs and views of the gorge.
From there, the hike continues through the Old Path, a historic trail leading to the Water Supply Pipe, one of the trail’s unique features.
