Visit Parnonas

In the heart of Parnonas, every visitor can experience something truly unique. The Lepida Gorge is incredibly beautiful, as if it has emerged from a magical place! Its stunning natural beauty can be explored in two ways: either by hiking or by enjoying our favorite sport, canyoning! Participants in canyoning will experience rappelling, jumps, and natural water slides.

Canyoning in the gorge is suitable only during the spring, as it dries up afterward. The gorge features 4-5 waterfalls, but two of them stand out: the impressive 70-meter waterfall and another smaller one at 45 meters, which leave visitors in awe. The area is filled with the fragrance of oregano and sage, while the small plane trees growing on the rocks create a picturesque landscape.

The herbs and the vast variety of flora are among the dominant features of Parnonas. The nearest village is Agios Ioannis, and visitors, apart from hiking or canyoning, can also enjoy a refreshing swim in the gorge’s crystal-clear waters or relax with a book accompanied by the soothing sounds of the waterfalls!

Road

The road network of Parnonas is quite extensive and connects the various villages, monasteries, and natural attractions in the area. While many sections are paved, there are several unpaved roads, especially as you approach more remote villages or areas of natural interest, such as gorges and refuges.

  • Main road axes: The main roads that cross Parnonas connect Leonidio, Kosmas, Agios Petros, and Monemvasia. These roads are usually paved and provide relatively easy access for visitors.
  • Dirt roads: In more isolated areas, such as the mountain villages and gorges, dirt roads are more common and often require 4×4 vehicles for comfortable and safe travel.
  • Road conditions: During the winter months or after heavy rainfall, some dirt roads may become impassable, making access more challenging.

The road network of Parnonas is suitable for those wishing to explore the broader area and its natural landscapes, but proper preparation is essential, especially if the destination is remote or if weather conditions are not ideal.

The ascent to the peak of Parnonas, Megali Tourla (1,934 meters), is a moderately difficult route, mainly suitable for experienced hikers and mountaineers due to its duration and altitude difference. Here are some technical details about the ascent:

  • Starting point: The ascent usually begins from the village of Moni Malevis , located at an altitude of about 900 meters. From there, well-maintained trails lead to the peak.
  • Altitude difference: The ascent involves an altitude gain of approximately 1,000 meters, making the route demanding, especially for beginners.
  • Route length: The total distance of the route ranges from 10-12 kilometers (depending on the starting point), with the ascent taking around 5-6 hours, including breaks.
  • Trail: The trail is relatively well-marked, passing through pine and fir forests. As you approach the peak, the landscape becomes more rocky and alpine.
  • Difficulty: It is considered a moderately difficult route due to the distance and gradient. While it does not require technical climbing skills, endurance and good physical condition are essential. In winter, the route can become more challenging due to snow and ice, requiring appropriate gear (crampons, ice axe, etc.).
  • Weather conditions: The best time for the ascent is from spring to autumn, as winter brings harsh conditions with snowfall and low temperatures. It’s important to check the weather forecast before starting.
  • Equipment: Basic mountaineering equipment is required for the ascent, such as sturdy hiking boots, trekking poles, water, food, a windproof/waterproof jacket, and a backpack with all necessary items.

The peak of Megali Tourla is one of the most beautiful in the Peloponnese, offering visitors breathtaking views and the opportunity to explore the wild beauty of Parnonas.
