Overview

Climbing in Meteora is unlike climbing anywhere else in Greece – or the world. Giant towers of conglomerate and sandstone, old monasteries balanced on summits, and a landscape that mixes nature, history and a unique spiritual atmosphere. Based in Kalabaka and Kastraki, a climbing day with BOA is built around your experience level, your goals and the conditions on the rock.

For those trying outdoor rock for the first time – or with limited experience – we select well–protected, easy–to–moderate routes on lower formations. Most lines are climbed on top rope or on carefully chosen sport/classic routes with solid protection, generous holds and comfortable stances. The focus is on safety, footwork, balance and learning how to trust the rock and the rope, with plenty of time to take in the views of the towers and monasteries around you.

For climbers with experience – including those familiar with lead climbing or long routes – we can step up to a classic multi–pitch route. Here you get the full “big route” feel: several rope lengths one above the other, building and using belay stances, managing rope systems and sharing leads where appropriate. The goal is usually a balcony–style summit with a stunning panorama over Meteora’s pillars and the Thessalian plain.

The day starts with a meeting in Kalabaka or Kastraki, followed by a short transfer or walk to the chosen crag or tower. Before we leave the ground, we go through an equipment and safety briefing: harness, helmet, rope, belay devices, communication between climber and belayer, and safe behaviour at the base of the cliff. As the session progresses, the guide selects lines that match the group, gradually increasing technical and mental challenge for those who feel ready – always within a clear safety framework.

Pacing stays relaxed, with breaks for water, snacks and photos from mid–height ledges that give you the famous Meteora panorama from halfway up the walls. The descent is usually a short hike down or a combination of down–climbing path and abseil, depending on the route. We finish back on the trail and then in the village, where you can close the day with coffee or food under the towers.

Meteora works perfectly as:

  1. A weekend of climbing (1–2 days on different crags or towers)
  2. A combo of climbing with via cordata / via ferrata, hiking around the monasteries, or cultural visits to the monasteries themselves

With easy train access from both Athens and Thessaloniki, climbing in Meteora is an ideal target not only for Greek climbers but also for visitors from abroad looking for a signature Greek rock experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Climbing is moving on natural rock or an indoor wall using technique, balance, hands and feet. There are different styles, such as bouldering (low height without a rope) and sport climbing (with a rope and fixed protection).

No. Beginners start with basic movement and safety skills on easy routes with guidance. The goal is to learn proper body position, footwork, balance, and core safety rules from day one.

For indoor or introductory outdoor climbing you typically need climbing shoes, a harness, a helmet (outdoor), a belay device and a locking carabiner. For outdoor sport routes you’ll also need a rope and quickdraws—usually provided by the guide/operator.

Climbing can be very safe when safety procedures are followed, gear is checked correctly, and proper supervision/training is in place. Safety is process-driven: partner checks, correct belaying, appropriate route choice, and respecting conditions.

Wear comfortable sports clothing that allows freedom of movement, and bring water and a light snack. For outdoor climbing, sunscreen, a hat, and a light windproof layer are recommended. Arrive rested, inform us about any injuries, and follow your instructor’s guidance.
