Hiking in Giona
Mountaineering – Night Photography – Visit to Museum
Come with us in a mountaineering and exploratory (sky) 3-day escape at Giona, the highest mountain of Sterea Hellas.
In ancient history, Giona is also known as the “Mountain without a Moon”, as according to the myth, when the demigod Moon wanted to meet her beloved Endymion who lived here, she left the sky without a moon and was hiding with him on the peaks and forests of Giona.
The area
Giona is the fifth highest mountain in Greece, after Olympus, Smolikas, Vorras (Kaimaktsalan), and Grammos. It is one of the most popular mountains for mountaineers and climbers. A mountain with a rich history from both Ottoman domination and our National Resistance, the famous Giona hiding places.
Also from the viewpoint of the exploitation of its underground wealth, bauxite, which has the consequence that the natural beauty, the landscape and the natural environment are wiped out.
The mountain is covered with fir trees and cedars, composed of limestone layers and is unquestionably one of the most important mountain natural ecosystems of Central Greece.
The top has three basic accesses. To the south, from the Gorge of Rekkas and Vinyadis Fokidas, the northwest from Lazorema and Sykia, and the most famous, the northeastern, from Mnemata and Koloskopi, which will be our point of ascent.
The slopes are covered with fir trees and Kefalonia fir and the area is inhabited by wolves, deer, wild boars, hares, jackals, ferrets, squirrels, foxes and wild goats that no longer live in any other mountain of Sterea Hellas. Here live rare birds of prey, gypaetos, golden eagles, vultures and hawks, but also petropolds, boulders and the gyon, from which it is probably named the mountain Giona. In the rich meadows of Giona you will find even sheep and goats.
More than 60 species of plants have been recorded in Giona: streams, cypresses, hollies, oaks, dense forests of Kefalonia fir and a number of wildflowers in the vast pastures near the peaks.
