Underground Athens

On the southern suburbs of the Athenian territory spread mines known from the same era that Minoans were thriving and almost 2500 years before the great Archimedes shout ‘eureka-eureka’ around 250 BC! They are among the oldest in the planet and one of the most well preserved industrial activities from ancient Greece. At the beginning, copper was the basic excavation element but around 5th-4th century BC the mines brew up wealth for Athens producing silver and iron from their 2000 wells! That production was responsible for the rise of Athenian political and economic ascendancy. Their exploitation ended around 2nd century BC.
Come with us to walk and discover all the details that made the mines exist for over 5000 years now!
Our guides will be there to navigate you up to 2 kilometers under the surface and inform you about the stones and the history of the mines.
