Activity point
The Kourtaliotiko gorge is located in the prefecture of Rethymnon, in Crete. The gorge starts near the village of Koxare and flows into Preveli. The gorge is formed between the Kuroupa and Xiro Oros mountains and its walls are up to 600 meters high. The walls of the gorge hide many caves and in terms of geology it is formed for the most part in the limestones of the Tripoli group, while at the entrance are the lower strata of Ravducha.
In the bed of the canyon there is a water source, at the point where the limestones of Tripoli come into contact with the layer of phyllites and quartzites. Kourtaliotis is one of the few rivers of Crete with a permanent flow of water throughout the year. It is also an important habitat for birds of prey, such as the vulture, the rock crane and the rock swallow.
