The program
Come with us on a 2-days mountain escape at Taygetos, the highest mountain in the Peloponnese.
Taygetos is the highest mountain in the Peloponnese.
Its length exceeds 100 km. and its ridge is one of the largest alpine routes in the country. The route is known as Pentadaktylos.
During the winter months it is covered by snow, which raises the difficulty and the ascents are made only with special equipment.
The top of Taygetos is called Prophet Elias and is known as one of the largest natural pyramids in the world. Every summer at Prophet Elias’ feast, hundreds of visitors ascend to the summit to have fun and watch the shadow of the pyramid that falls on the sea at sunrise. Also, the flora is rich, in which over 700 species of plants have been recorded. A large part of the mountain is occupied by pine trees. It is the southernmost point of Europe that we encounter these trees. There are also fir, cypress, cedar, oak, eucalyptus, evergreen maple etc. Taygetos is also known for the mountain tea that grows on its slopes. This endemic plant is also found in Parnonas. The fauna of the mountain is poor and consists of foxes, caterpillars, hares, ferrets and small numbers of jackals and wild cats.
