A few words about the places we will travel to…

General information about the Peloponnese

… known also as Morias, it is the biggest peninsula of Greece.

It is located in the southern of the country’s continental part and is connected to Central Greece through a narrow strip of land, the Isthmus of Corinth, where in 1893 the homonymous canal was constructed, turning the Peloponnese literally into an island. In addition, since 2004 the Rio-Antirrio bridge (since 2007 bears the name “Charilaos Trikoupis”), connects the Peloponnese with Central Greece and the rest of the mainland.

Its area is 21,439 sq. km. and it is a historic cradle of Hellenism and has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Mycenaean civilization was developed there and the three main Greek tribes (Achaeans, Ionians and Dorians) inhabited the land, while in the Peloponnese were located some of the most important Greek city-states, such as Sparta, Corinth and Argos. It was the theater of most of the war conflicts that took place in Greece, with top historical examples of the Peloponnesian War and the Greek Revolution (1821), of which it was a starting point, and also experienced various conquerors such as Romans, French, Ottomans and others.

The forest of Foloi
Foloi is 20 km away from Ancient Olympia. It spreads over an area of 42,000 acres, and is one of the rare oak forests in Europe and the only one in the Balkans. It is completely flat, thanks to the fact that it is located on the homonymous plateau, which the locals call “The balcony of Ilia”.
Her name, Foloi, was taken by Centaurus Folos, who lived in the woods.
Since the forest of Folois is at its utmost completely flat, it is especially suitable for hiking and spring biking. Numerous paths and forest roads cross the green “carpet”, making zig zags between towering tree trunks, flower-lined clearings and singing streams.

Ancient Olympia
Olympia was the most glorious sanctuary of ancient Greece dedicated to Zeus. It was the venue for the Olympic Games that took place in the context of the Olympics, the most important festival of Greeks during most of the antiquity.
In Olympia, within the magnificent temple of the god, was also placed the golden ivory statue of Zeus, the work of Pheidias, which was known in antiquity as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Neda
A natural pool is filled by the waterfall that falls by the rocks that surround it. That’s how paradise must look like.
It is the only female river in Greece.
Neda was the daughter of the Ocean, and one of the three nymphs who raised Jupiter in Arcadia. The river that took her name was created, according to myth, when Rea struck the dry land with a stick.

Pylos
Pylos is a small picturesque seaside town, located in the southwestern part of the prefecture of Messinia. Pylos is amphitheatrically built at the south opening of Navarino’s bay, where the historic naval battle took place.
It is the largest natural harbor of the Peloponnese and at the same time one of the most interesting tourist destinations of Messinia, thanks to the glorious history and the rich natural beauties of the region.

Mani
The scenery of Mani is unique both in terms of its physical configuration and its architectural physiognomy. In Mani are 98 of the 118 villages of the Peloponnese that have been officially designated as traditional, along with many caves, cobbled streets and canyons for hikers. The villages of Mani retain their traditional architecture and their special lifestyle. Nestled between the rugged mountain ranges, beautiful and imposing, they are waiting to narrate their story to visitors.

Diros Cave
A journey to the magic of nature!
One of the finest caves in the world is located on the west coast of the Laconian Peninsula, at the Diros Bay. Under the simple landscape of Mani, nature with unparalleled art and patience smothered a miracle beyond imagination.
Bright stalactites and stalagmites, stunning curtains and glowing crystals adorn each corner, creating a breathtaking spectacle!
It has been described as the most beautiful lake cave in the world, between the so-called caves.

Tenaro
The cape that the ancient people believed was the gateway to Hades. They called it “Shifted Edges” and god Apollo gave it to Poseidon in exchange for Delphi. There, the ancient ancestors placed the gates of Hades, from which Hercules brought down Cerverus to the Underworld.
Building materials, as well as carvings found on the rock of an adjacent cave, suggest that in the cave of Tenaro was a cult worship for Poseidon.
Tenaro is essentially the southernmost part of continental Europe.

Taygetos
Taygetos, the mountain which rumor has it will become the highest mountain of the world!!!
According to studies, it is α very young mountain which, according to the changes in the tectonic plates, will rise too high, resulting in some time becoming the highest point of the earth.
Taygetos is one of the largest mountains in Greece, with an altitude of about 115 km, a maximum width of 30 km and an area of 2,500 square kilometers. Its impressive mountainous volume has the highest height of all the mountains of the Peloponnese (2,404 m) and is therefore characterized as the “Moria’s dome”.
Beautiful villages, rough paths, fertile valleys, successive lagoons leading to the sea, steep peaks and large plateaus are the main features of Mount Taygetos. On the west side is the Kalamata city, and on the east are Mystras and Sparta.

Sparta
Sparta, a city-state of Ancient Greece, built on the banks of the Evrotas River in Laconia, in the southeastern part of the Peloponnese, has become famous throughout the world for its military power, discipline and heroism. It is also known in Greek Mythology, especially for the myth of Beautiful Helen.
The military power of Sparta was due to its Education system imposed by the law of Lycurgus and it was unique in Ancient Greece.

Mystras
The foundation of Mystras is associated with the first conquest of Constantinople by the Crusaders of the Fourth Crusade in 1204.
In 1262 he was delivered to the Byzantine Empire as a ransom for the liberation of the Franc prince, along with the castles of Marine and Myzithra.
The security provided by the naturally fortified hill of Mystras will cause the population of Lacedaemonia to travel there and from 1460 to 1540 it becomes one of the most important centers of production and trading of silk in the eastern Mediterranean.
In 1989, UNESCO’s committee decided that Mystras was listed as a cultural asset on the World Heritage List.

Mycenae
The “Golden Mycenae”, the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon, which Homer first praised in his epic poem, is the most important and richest palace of the Late Bronze Age in Greece. Their name has been given to one of the brightest cultures of Greek prehistory, the Mycenaean, and the myths associated with their history penetrated the centuries in the  Homeric epic poems and the great tragedies of the Classical period, while inspired and continuing to inspire the world spiritual creation and art.

Epidaurus
The most beautiful ancient theater in the world, a unique archaeological site and a natural landscape that calms the soul.
An ancient theater that remains “alive”.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site worth to visit.
It combines perfect acoustic, elegance and symmetrical proportions.

Nafplio
Nafplio, the first capital of the Modern Greek state, over the Kapodistrias government during the period 1828 – 1833. Nowadays it is characterized as a traditional settlement.
Nafplio is known for Bourtzi, a fort built on an island in the harbor, as well as Palamidi, the Venetian fortress that dominates the city, where the prison of Kolokotronis was located.

In all the archaeological sites of the Peloponnese.
In the land where Leonidas grew up, in ancient Sparta.
In the land where the Olympic Games were born.
In one of the largest pirate bastions of the Mediterranean.
The land where Agamemnon became so great.
